![]() ![]() GTĬountdown to RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2023 What emerges is a deeply toxic relationship of abuse, addiction and aggression, with superficially amusing memes – “megapints” of wine, dog faeces in bed – given grim context, while the media circus around it defies belief as one “Darth News” (a guy in a Deadpool mask) leads the chorus pushing Depp’s side of the story to a fanatical and indeed misogynistic degree. ![]() The trial, brought after a 2018 piece by Heard in the Washington Post in which she referred to herself as a public figure representing domestic abuse, is a sordid affair, with Depp a disinterested figure playing to the mob and Heard sometimes struggling in the face of fierce cross-examination. Emma Cooper’s compelling three-part documentary, continuing tomorrow at 9pm and concluding on Tuesday, intercuts footage from the courtroom with online analyses, both sober and bizarre, of the case as it happened. While the decision to livestream the 2022 defamation suit brought by Johnny Depp against his ex-wife, Amber Heard, may have been ethically problematic, it did at least allow for unprecedented insights into Hollywood psyches, rabid fanbases and, somewhere along the line, the legal process. ![]()
